It’s been a long while since I wrote on here, it’s one of those things everyone does or should do every once in a while – re-evaluating priorities. I’ve tried writing other stuff in my ‘little break’ from reality; I’ve written a novel (fictional), I’ve read very little, thought very hard, avoided individuals and basically everyone who cares about me or my existence. I’ve got to admit it was not as I planned it to be, but I do admit that no matter how much you love your own company, it gets lonely every once in a while. Quite frankly, I never thought I’d be writing about this topic. I’ve been wanting to write it, but for some crazy reason I couldn’t. That crazy and insane reason was that I wanted to experience it before I wrote about it. I think you’d agree that that is not such a bad idea.
Apart from the reality check, another reason I haven’t written on here is that writing is one way I say what I truly mean (even though it’s not easy). If I didn’t mean something, then I probably wouldn’t write it. But here I am writing again. And all I seem to talk and think about these days is change. Not just any change, but positive change.
There are many constants in life and living. In fact, we need some things to stay constant or else our survival would be compromised. I know you can list many of these constants; they exist in physics, in math, chemistry geography, astronomy etc. But the downside to the constants in the categories mentioned above is that they are just out of our reach as human beings; they were there before we existed, and we definitely can’t change them. But there is a constant you and I can manipulate; it’s the constant called change.
One of the constants life presents is change. Change is dynamic they say and I totally agree; it is so dynamic that it is constantly changing (pretty ironic isn’t it?). The fact that it is forever dynamic is what makes it a constant. It’s kind of exciting and a bit mind boggling if you think about it.
In the light of recent development, you’d notice that change has been neglected. By negligence, I mean that there is no conscious effort in that direction. Whether we like it or not, we are changing, be it positively or negatively. Even fighting change is change itself. When you find yourself doing things you never imagined you’d do, you changed; when you stop fighting and give up when life throws the usual stones and lemons, its change; when people’s lives no longer matter to you when it used to, it’s change. We are capable of affecting other people’s lives with change. Change is all around us, and we have the power to turn it as we please. It’s the one constant we can manipulate to make our lives worth living.
But who says change has to be in the negative direction. I’m not saying it is simple, because I for one know it isn’t. You’re going to be faced with more difficulty than ever, especially when it’s a transition from the bad side to the good side. Richard Hooker once said “Change is not made without inconvenience, even from worse to better”. I know it’s gonna roughen you up a little bit, it’s gonna look weird to the people around you (creepy to some extent), it’s gonna be fought from all sides, it’s gonna take your breath away, it’s gonna feed off of your energy on most days, it’s gonna be one of the hardest things you’ve ever done. Making positive changes is never easy, never has never will be, but I can assure you it’s totally worth it.
For some reason, I have the urge to end this. Maybe there’s a lot more to change than I’m saying. But I know this much; we all need it at some point in our lives, no matter how perfect we think we are, or how too imperfect we are. Fathers, sons, daughters, mothers, religious leaders, followers, political leaders, citizens need change. You might be saying it, crying it, shouting it on the streets and in your homes, but it starts with you; nothing is going to change positively unless we begin to change in that direction. The decisions and choices we make affect us and generations to come; the decision to change or refuse to change is a life and future altering decision as well. So let’s start making changes; corrupt leaders and followers in all facets of life can make changes, students and teachers can start making changes, business owners and customers can make changes. In the long run, you’d be surprised how much good we are capable of and how wonderful life can truly be. And what better year to start making changes than the year 2012. Happy New Year!
